Biography


Born and raised in North Vancouver, British Colombia, Thad has proven to be an important new voice in Canada’s jazz community. Having grown up in a musical family, Thad found his passion for composition at an early age. His love of piano and trumpet followed shortly after. These passions have long-since developed into lifelong pursuits, through which Thad has discovered and fostered his joy of ceaseless learning and education.

As a student of music, Thad has had the privilege of studying with the likes of Brad Turner, Kevin Elaschuk, Bill Coon, Jared Burrows, and his father, Vince Mai. Thad has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the title of “Rising Star Artist” at the 2018 West Coast Big Band Festival, the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence, and the Capilano Achievement Scholarship. He has also been featured on CBC Radio’s Hot Air with Margaret Gallagher.

Through Capilano University, Thad had the privilege of performing alongside internationally renowned artists, such as Ingrid Jensen, Randy Brecker, Ambrose Akinmusire, Norma Winstone, Donny McCaslin, and David Braid. He has also had the opportunity to perform for three consecutive years in the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival with numerous groups, and continues to perform weekly at many of Vancouver’s local music venues.
